High-ranking government officials from Sulu province, including Governor Sakur Tan and Vice Governor Toto Tan, have joined the fold of the House Speaker Martin Romualdez-led Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) party.
Romualdez, the Lakas-CMD president, flew to the provincial capital of Jolo on Thursday, Aug. 1 to administer the oath of a total of 50 new party members.
Governor Tan and his fellow Sulu officials comprise the single largest group of local officials who joined Lakas-CMD.
They made the transfer roughly three months before the filing of certificates of candidacy (COC) for the 2025 mid-term elections.
“I take your decision to mean that you share our aspiration and the vision of President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ R. Marcos Jr. for a better life for our people and a more progressive Philippines,” Romualdez told those who made the jump to the country’s largest political fiction.
He said the expansion of Lakas-CMD in Congress and in the provinces widens the grassroots support for President Marcos. Over in the 300-plus strong House of Representatives, 102 are Lakas stalwarts.
Romualdez said he hoped the new members from the province would have a fruitful engagement with Lakas-CMD.
The new members include 38 mayors and vice mayors and 10 provincial board members.
Romualdez is the cousin of President Marcos and is his top ally in the legislature.
