'Devoid of politics, serbisyo lang': Tacloban to host biggest Bagong Pilipinas Serbisyo Fair yet

The House-organized Bagong Pilipinas Serbisyo Fairs (PBSF) is going region-wide for the first time on Friday, Aug. 2, and the the event slated for Eastern Visayas is poised to be the "biggest and most inclusive" under the program. 

Leading the conduct of the BPSF-Eastern Visayas--to be held in his hometown of Tacloban City--Leyte is House Speaker Martin Romualdez. 

So huge will be the event that at least 241 out of the current 306 House of Representatives members have signified their intention to attend the all-encompassing service caravan. In plenary attendance terms, this number constitutes a rather impressive quorum. 

“[There are] 241 House members who will be visiting tomorrow to witness the Bagong Pilipinas Serbisyo Fair at gusto nilang makita na yung inilaan nilang pondo sa mga ahensya ng gobyerno at mga program nito ay naparating talaga sa mga tao,” House Deputy Secretary General and BPSF National Secretariat chief Sofonias Gabonada Jr. said. 

(They want to see that the funds they have appropriated to the different government agencies and programs actually go to the people.) 

Gabonada said this 21st staging of the BPSF will pour a total of over P1.2 billion worth of services to the people of Region VIII. Out of the amount, over P800 million is in the form of cash assistance. 

Gabonada and Tingog Party-list Rep. Jude Acidre announced the details of the first region-wide BPSF during a press conference Thursday afternoon, Aug. 1 at the Guest House of the Leyte Normal University in Tacloban. 

The House deputy secretary general says that the service caravan is "devoid of politics", and that it's all about bringing services closer to the people. 

While the BPSF is a Marcos administration endeavor, it is closely associated with the House, particularly the chamber's leader, Romualdez. 

The main rollout of the service caravan will be in Tacloban, while other “mini-BPSF” will be held simultaneously in other provinces in Eastern Visayas. 

Gabonada said the BSPF can accomplish faster its original goal of covering all 82 provinces of the country if it uses the region-based model. 

“If successful, we would replicate it (in other areas of the country),” Gabonada said, as he noted that Leyte was among the first four provinces where BPSF was officially launched in September 2023. 

Acidre said the presence of the lawmakers in the service caravan also manifests the solid support of the House for the initiatives of President Marcos to bring positive change not only in Leyte and Eastern Visayas but also in the entire country, 

“Consistent po ang ating Speaker (Romualdez) at ang ating Presidente Marcos na ilapit ang serbisyo sa taong bayan (Our Speaker and our President Marcos are consistent with their desire to brign service closer to the people). So let’s take advantage of it,” said Acidre.
