In a statement, MBHTE chief Mohagher Iqbal said that madrasahs have played a crucial role in empowering Bangsamoro youth as they impart knowledge and skills relevant to their beliefs and culture.
Unlike typical Islamic schools usually confined in Muslim communities that primarily focus on Islamic studies and Arabic languages, Iqbal said that the public madrasah will also integrate the Department of Education’s national curriculum.
The Islamic school in Barangay Datu Balabaran has six four-story buildings and can accommodate least 2,000 students.
Its launching coincided with the opening of classes in public and private schools across the country on July 29.
Iqbal added that the curriculum also includes the tahderiyyah for kindergarten, a three- to five-year education program developed by the Bangsamoro Development Agency (BDA).
According to the BDA, the program hopes to provide early learning program to 40,000 Bangsamoro children through the expansion of the madrasah delivering early learning program.
The establishment of the Islamic schools is provided for under the Bangsamoro Education Code of 2021.
“This is the first public madrasah not only here but in the entire Philippines, courtesy of MBHTE and the Bangsamoro government. We really want this to happen. That is not only in the mind but in the administrative and in the education code on how we build the public madrasah,” Iqbal said.
He likened the establishment of public madrasah to the standard public schools in the country. “If you see that the public school has division offices and then there are many schools more than thousands, that is our view on public madrasah.”
Iqbal said MBHTE will establish division offices and principals for every public madrasah. “Even though everything is not complete, we have started, and the rest will follow. We are determined to achieve our goals.”
MBHTE-Madaris Education Director General Tahir Nalg emphasized the establishment of the public madrasah is one of the focus areas is to strengthen madaris education.
Nalg added that the establishment of the Directorate General of Madaris Education is a proof of the MBHTE’s commitment to the Bangsamoro people.
“It doesn’t end there. Many programs have been launched by our Honorable Minister in support of madaris education. Last week, we were in Metro Manila for a madrasa partners’ forum with national officials from the Department of Education (DepEd) to showcase how the madrasah educational system operates,” he added.
