CAMP FLORENDO, La Union – A man drowned while saving his relatives after their bamboo raft capsized on a river in Barangay Guelew, San Carlos City, Pangasinan on Sunday, July 7.

Police identified the victim as Romnick L. Vilda, 34, a resident of Barangay Quetegan, Urbiztondo, Pangasinan.
Police Lt. McKinley Mendoza, spokesperson of the San Carlos City Police Station, said the victim and eight relatives went to the river to fish.
While they were on the middle of the river, the raft capsized due to strong current.
Vilda was able to bring all his relatives to the river bank but he was swept away by the strong current. Rescuers recovered the victim’s body.
Police said the raft was overloaded and only good for four persons.
Mendoza advised people to take extra precaution while fishing on the river due to the strong current this rainy season.
