Coming from a heartbreaking loss to Japan, Gilas Pilipinas Women regained their bearing and thumped Thailand, 68-58, in the 35th Jones Cup at the Xinzhuang Gymnasium in New Taipei City Tuesday, July 9.

After a low scoring affair in the first half, Jack Animam and the Filipinas made a huge breakaway in the third quarter that made it a 50-32 count before entering the final frame.
The Thais tried to mount a comeback in the fourth, but the lead was just too much to overcome as Gilas recorded its second win in four games in the week-long tournament.
The victory also came as a morale booster after the Pinay dribblers suffered an 83-85 loss to Japan on Monday, July 8.
Animam powered the Nationals with her double-double effort of 10 points and 21 rebounds. Naomi Panganiban backed her up by listing nine points and six assists while Camille Nolasco and Gabby Ramos tallied nine and eight, respectively.
Veteran Afril Bernardino also shone with 17 rebounds to show along with five points, three assists and four steals.
It was a nip-and-tuck affair for both teams in the first two quarters, but things turned around when Animam asserted her might underneath the basket to power Gilas' assault in the third quarter.
Sasiporn Wongtapha scored 18 points to lead Thailand which also had a 2-2 record.
Up next for the Filipina cagers is Chinese Taipei A on Wednesday, July 10, at the same venue.
