Duterte urges learners to play an active role in education reform initiatives
Vice President and outgoing Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sara Duterte emphasized on Tuesday, July 9, the importance of placing learners at the center of education reform initiatives.

"Your role in this endeavor is not just important; it is essential. Each of you has a unique perspective that can drive change, inspire innovation, and foster a more dynamic and relevant education system," she said in her message for the 2024 Learners’ Convergence Philippines held in Cebu City.
Duterte also hoped platforms like the Learners’ Convergence, which enable students to participate in the education process, would remain available.
"This convergence is one of the platforms designed to give you a voice, a space where your ideas can be heard, and where you can engage in meaningful dialogue with educators, policymakers, and fellow students," she said.
Duterte stressed that education is a collaborative effort requiring the collective involvement of learners, teachers, parents, and the community.
"By working together, we can build an education system that not only meets today's needs but also prepares us for the challenges of tomorrow," she added.
Learner-centered initiatives
Meanwhile, Duterte noted that DepEd will continue programs and projects prioritizing learners.
As part of DepEd's efforts to promote sports development, Duterte announced that various projects will be open to students. For example, she mentioned the pilot launch of the School Sports Club Program in 45 schools and its forthcoming expansion nationwide in all public schools.
"We have also distributed over 1.6 million copies of the first DepEd Sports Manual to all school division offices and trained over 1,000 sports trainers," Duterte said.
"Furthermore, we celebrated the achievements of our student-athletes from the recently concluded ASEAN Schools Games, where they brought home 30 medals for the Philippines," she added.
To better support their journey towards becoming responsible and effective leaders, Duterte stated that DepEd has made "significant improvements" to the Learner Government Program. This includes the Learners’ Convergence Philippines, now in its second year, which involved over 2,000 learner-leaders from 218 Schools Division Offices (SDOs) and the National Youth for Environment in Schools Organization (YES-O) Camp.
"We have also enhanced career guidance programs, connecting over 5,000 learners to career opportunities, scholarships, and entrepreneurial avenues through the National Career Expo, ensuring that you will be job-ready, competent, and productive members of society in the future," Duterte said.
Duterte stepped down from her post as Education Secretary on June 19. Her resignation is effective on July 19.
