DENR: Philippine climate change initiatives reach $13.5-B

The Philippines has made significant progress in its climate change initiatives after it bagged around  $13.5 billion technical and financial aid from various international development partners as of June this year, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) disclosed on Monday, July 8.

Based on the DENR data, the funding covers 94 projects involving 31 development partners.

Notably, 96 percent of the total aid, amounting to $13.5 billion, is contributed through 23 loan-funded projects.

"These initiatives span key sectors such as transport, agriculture, waste management, industrial processes, and energy," the DENR statement read.

The DENR said transport projects constitute the largest share with $11.79 billion in loans, encompassing 21 ongoing and two upcoming projects.

In agriculture, $81 million in grants are directed towards enhancing livelihoods and implementing smart agricultural technologies.

Meanwhile, the waste and industrial processes sectors received $11.79 million and $9.22 million, respectively, for project funding. The energy sector also benefits significantly, with investments totaling $1.08 billion.

DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga highlighted the importance of the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and the Nationally Determined Contribution Implementation Plan (NDCIP) in enhancing resilience and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

She emphasized the need for strategic coordination with development partners and financial institutions to ensure effective climate action across sectors and regions.

“This coordination ensures that adaptation and mitigation efforts are integrated across sectors, scales, and regions,” Loyzaga said.
