Naomi Panganiban’s strong debut in the senior’s level went for naught as Gilas Pilipinas Women opened their 34th William Jones Cup campaign on the wrong foot and dropped a 73-60 decision against Chinese Taipei B on Saturday, July 6.

Fresh off the Gilas Girls’ campaign in the FIBA U18 Asia Cup, Panganiban immediately impressed by leading the way for the PH cagebelles with 16 points although not enough to power the cold-shooting Filipinas past the hosts.
Gilas Women showed rust in their first tournament since last year’s FIBA Asia Cup, shooting a measly 3-of-26 percent shooting from deep as compared to the Taiwanese 13 three-point makes.
Veterans Afril Bernardino and Jack Animam tried to make up for Gilas’ cold shooting with inside attack but the Taiwanese defense was a tough nut to crack for the Filipinas.
Bernardino finished with 14 points while Jack Animam chipped in a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Chen Yu Chieh, on the other hand, led the balanced attack from the hosts with 13 points on two triples while five other players from Chinese Taipei contributed at least five points apiece.
Gilas kept in step early in the opening frame, only trailing by one point, 17-16 but allowed the Chinese Taipei to create some separation in the second frame where it outscored the Filipinas, 17-11.
The Taiwanese took care of the lead from there and fended off every Gilas efforts to make a comeback to notch their first win of the tournament.
