Global star Leonardo DiCaprio sparked a boom of noise taking to social media to call for the protection of the Masungi Georeserve.
Several Filipino celebrities have since followed his lead, going on to urge for the same.
These include Arci Muñoz, John Arcilla, Karen Davila, all of whom were quick to thank DiCaprio for his effort to alert the attention of President Bongbong Marcos on the issue.
Said John, “Thank you so much for this awareness and call. Such a noble endeavor; it’s a pity that we Filipinos ourselves are not even aware of this. Thank you."
“Thank you. The people depending on our environment are our most vulnerable sectors who haven’t been given enough of a voice to protect the natural resources that they love and rely on,” said Arci.
Karen added, “Thank you @leonardodicaprio and Bravo @masungigeoreserve for keeping on! Amazing to see the world stand with the brave work you do!”
Meanwhile, actress Curtis took to X to voice out her support for Masungi's protection.
She posted, “We must protect MasungiGeoreserve. I have yet to visit but have been meaning to go!”
Note that Glaiza de Castro and Miss Universe Philippines first runner-up Stacey Gabriel recently participated in a tree-nurturing activity at the Masungi Georeserve.
Prior, actress Nadine Lustre expressed her support for Masungi.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is not moved.
It said, “We appreciate the statements of concern for the Philippine environment from international celebrities who are distinguished in their respective fields. However, no one is exempt from the law.”
The department has recommended the cancellation of a 2017 Memorandum of Agreement granting the Masungi Georeserve Foundation Inc. (MGFI) perpetual land trust for conservation, because of certain provisions that supposedly violate the Constitution.
The DENR describes the area as a "resort" being used for gain.
“The Filipino people own the area occupied by Masungi Georeserve Foundation and the operation of resort venues that charge the public for day tours, meetings, and weddings remains non-compliant with Philippine laws,” it said.
In response, Masungi Georeserve posted on X: “Masungi is not a resort,” insisting they are “implementing some of the strictest and most sustainable visitor protocols and carrying capacities in the country.”
The MGFI is funded by the private firm Blue Star Construction & Development Corporation.
