Man killed in shootout with police in Cebu


CEBU CITY – A 34-year-old man was killed after he allegedly shot it out with police in Barangay Panangban, Compostela town, northern Cebu on Wednesday night, July 3.

The fatality was identified as Joel Niño Pareha, 34.

The Compostela Police Station went to Sitio Purok after receiving a report of an indiscriminate firing in the area.

Lawmen chanced upon an armed man who turned out to be Pareha when they arrived in the area.

Police tried to convince the man to surrender. Instead of surrendering, Pareha allegedly drew a .38 revolver, triggering a shootout.

The man was hit in the abdomen during the exchange of gunfire. Emergency responders from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office brought the man to a hospital where he was declared dead.
