Gru, the former supervillain (Steve Carrell), and their family are back for a fourth outing in Despicable Me 4 from Illumination Entertainment. This time, it's personal, as an old rival calls for Gru to settle an old score.

Enter Maxime Le Mal, supercriminal extraordinaire voiced with manic, comic gusto by Will Ferrel. Le Mal has a history with Gru, having gone to the same school of villainy, Lycee Pas Bon (Literally, The School of No Good). Think Hogwarts, except for the more criminally inclined.

To stay out of harm’s way, Gru packs up his life, relocating wife Lucy, his three daughters, Margo, Edith and Agnes, plus the new baby Gru Jr. to a new town. Much of the comedy comes from everyone trying to adapt to their new lives, such as Lucy getting a job and Agnes refusing to use her new name because she’s a good little girl, and to do so would be lying.

Now, let's be real here: no one is ever going to accuse a Despicable Me film of being a film full of gravitas, and this one keeps things firmly in the looney toons camp of comedy with slapstick moments and witty one-liners. But that’s alright; it's a chance to let your hair down and be entertained without any pretense of seriousness—just good old child-like fun.

And there’s no shortage of hilarious capers either, as not only do we get the minions back, but this time, we get the Mega Minions too, a group of minions with superpowers ala X-Men or Avengers. As you might expect, they do more harm than good.

A lot is going on, and only some things seem necessary, but everything does turn out to be funny. If anything is missing, it's that the relationship that was the original anchor of Gru’s relationship with his three adoptive daughters doesn’t get much development and screen time.

All in all, Despicable Me 4 is a fun hour and a half of antics and silliness. It's out in theaters now.
