The victim, Reynaldo Mojares, passed away in a private hospital here on Wednesday, July 31, three days after he accidentally fell at the Guinpana-an Elementary School on Sunday, July 28.
Ian Arnold Arnaez, spokesperson of Department of Education (DepEd)-Negros Occidental, confirmed the death of Mojares.
Despite the end of Brigada Eskwela on Friday, July 27, Arnaez said that Mojares, his wife, and some teachers returned to the school on Sunday to continue cleaning in preparation for the opening of classes on Monday, July 29.
After cleaning, teachers and utility personnel went home. Mojares, who was waiting for his wife, also a teacher, finish chores in her classroom, saw leaves on the roof of a classroom.
Mojares climbed a ladder to the roof to remove the leaves. After finishing, he went down but slipped and reportedly hit the ground head first. Mojares was taken to a hospital.
Arnaez cited Mojares, saying he went beyond his call of duty to ensure the welfare of pupils in time for the school opening.
He added that Mojares was known to be hardworking and enthusiastic.
Arnaez said that Mojares had been in the service for 30 years and had been with the school for four years.
Mojares was supposed to retire in December this year or January 2025.
