Over 1K college students provide reading tutoring as DSWD wraps up this year's 'Tara, Basa!' program

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) wrapped up its 20-day “Tara, Basa!” tutoring program, during which 1,625 college students from state and local universities in the Visayas and Mindanao provided reading tutoring to elementary learners struggling with reading or who are non-readers.
The program is DSWD's reformatted educational assistance, designed to create a learning ecosystem where college students are capacitated and deployed as tutors and youth development workers (YDWs) to enhance the reading proficiency of elementary students.
“With the expansion of the tutoring program outside the National Capital Region (NCR), we can help more college students to defray their school expenses such as transportation expenses, school supplies, school projects, allowances, and other related expenses,” DSWD spokesperson Irene Dumlao said on Wednesday, July 31.
Each tutor and YDW will receive cash-for-work (CFW) compensation based on the regional minimum wage rate for the 20 tutoring and parenting sessions with grade school learners and their parents.
Meanwhile, DSWD said 9,565 incoming students, along with their parents and guardians from the two island clusters, also benefited from the tutoring program.
Parents and guardians of elementary learners will also receive cash assistance for attending “nanay-tatay teacher sessions” and assisting with their children’s learning and reading assignments.
During simultaneous culminating activities across participating schools in Regions 7 (Central Visayas), 8 (Eastern Visayas), 10 (Northern Mindanao), and 12 (Soccsksargen) on Friday, July 26, DSWD recognized the contributions of college students who taught struggling and non-reading incoming Grade 2 students and supported their parents or guardians.
Dumlao pointed out that education and community cooperation are essential for the ongoing development of the youth.
“The tutoring program aims to increase the involvement in nation-building of poor college students and those enrolled in state or local universities and colleges while helping them in completing their tertiary education,” she said.
Dumlao said separate culminating activities will be held in the participating schools of the Luzon cluster following the completion of the 20 tutoring and parenting sessions.
“Classes in some parts of Luzon were canceled due to the recent super typhoon Carina compounded by the southwest monsoon,” she said.
Participating schools in Manila, Valenzuela, Muntinlupa, San Juan, Quezon, Mandaluyong, and Pasig held make-up sessions for the Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program on Tuesday, July 30.
