DOST cites role of Visayas LGUs in disaster mitigation

ILOILO CITY – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said local government units (LGUs) in the Visayas play a crucial role in disaster mitigation.

“LGUs share the best practices that other LGUs who might learn a thing or more on how to best implement and operationalize disaster risk reduction management strategies with the help of technology and innovation,” said DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations Dr. Sancho A. Mabborang.

“LGUs are not just mere participants, but are active collaborators. LGUs provide significant insights based on actual experiences in the past and on the ground,” added Mabborang during the recent Visayas leg of the DOST Handa Pilipinas: Innovation in Climate and Disaster Resilience Nationwide Exposition.

The exposition that coincided with the commemoration of National Disaster Resilience Month aims to harness disaster preparedness by utilizing science and innovation in Western Visayas, Central Visayas, and Eastern Visayas.

Through talks and consultations, the DOST was able to cull insights of LGUs on what it can do to bridge the gap in bringing the appropriate scientific and technological solutions to a particular locality.

DOST Regional Director for Western Visayas Rowen Gelonga lauded LGUs, particularly in Western Visayas, for establishing Emergency Operation Centers.

Gelonga said that with Emergency Operation Centers, LGUs can directly access information from weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

He said that more LGUs are utilizing funds for DRRMs.

DOST officer-in-charge Regional Director for Central Visayas Tristan Abando said Handa Pilipinas seeks to have more LGUs implement and adopt science-based solutions to DRRMs.
