Longing for redemption and a fruitful campaign after bowing out early in the Tokyo Games three years ago, the IJF world No. 92 Watanabe wanted to make a statement but Jing pinned her down for a 20-second count which ultimately ended the Filipina's campaign in the French capital.

With the victory, the ranked No. 22 Chinese set up a Round-of-16 collision with Kosovo’s Laura Fazliu, who is No. 3 in their weight class.
