Mayor Elmer Untaran of San Jose de Buenavista, Antique, dies at 65

ILOILO CITY – Mayor Elmer Cerdeña Untaran of San Jose de Buenavista, the provincial capital of Antique, died on Monday, July 1. He was 65.

Sister-in-law Mayor Mary Jean “Bebot” Nicopior-Te of Libertad town, Antique, said he succumbed to lung cancer while confined at the Makati Medical Center in Makati City.

Tributes have poured in for Untaran, who was serving his third and final term as mayor.

“It is with profound sadness that we mourn the sudden loss of Mayor Elmer Untaran, a visionary leader who left an indelible mark on our community,” said Antique Rep. AA Legarda.

The Philippine flag was hoisted at half-mast at the municipal hall starting Wednesday, July 3, and a candle-lighting ceremony was held by the local government unit of San Jose de Buenavista in honor of Untaran.

Vice Mayor Justin Encarnacion will become the mayor under the rule of succession.
