NDRRMC: Death toll from typhoon-enhanced 'habagat' rains jumps to 36

As earlier advised, the number of people who died due to the combined effects of southwest monsoon (habagat), Super Typhoon “Carina” and Tropical Depression “Butchoy” further increased to 36 from 28, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Monday, July 29.
Reports from the affected regions started reaching the NDRRM Operations Center in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City as the weather improved, painting a clearer picture of the extent of devastation caused by the recent typhoon.
Most of the fatalities were recorded in the National Capital Region (NCR) which had 15 deaths; followed by Calabarzon (Region 4A) with 10; and Zamboanga Peninsula (Region 9) with four. Central Luzon (Region 3) and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) had two deaths apiece; while Ilocos (Region 1), Northern Mindanao (Region 10), and Davao (Region 11) had one death each.
Of the 36 deaths, a total of 14 cases were already validated by the NDRRMC. Ten persons died due to separate landslides in Angeles City, Pampanga; Agoncillo, Batangas; and Zamboanga City. Three victims drowned in separate incidents in Maramag, Bukidnon; and Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental. One person was pinned to death after being hit by a fallen tree in Nasugbu, Batangas.
The remaining 22 fatalities were still subject for confirmation, including two men aged 18 and 53 who reportedly drowned and a 32-year-old man who reportedly died from electrocution all in Rodriguez, Rizal.
Three persons also remained missing in Regions 1 and 10, while six others were injured in Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) and Region 10.
Meanwhile, the number of affected persons due to habagat, Carina and Butchoy also increased to 4,553,752 individuals (1,240,090 families). The latest report showed that all 17 regions in the country were affected by the three weather systems.
However, most of the typhoon victims who were displaced due to widespread flooding and landslides have already returned home. The number of displaced persons went down from 1.07 million to 794,000 which included 152,800 individuals still staying in 848 evacuation centers.
The national government has provided a total of P3.4 billion worth of relief assistance to the typhoon victims, according to the NDRRMC.
