House Speaker Martin Romualdez on Sunday, July 28, expressed gratitude to the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) for donating US$50,000, or around P2.925 million, to the victims of Typhoon "Carina" and the seasonal southwest monsoon (Habagat).
“I am sure that our people, especially those affected by the recent typhoon, deeply appreciate the kind gesture of our friends from Singapore,” Romualdez said.
“On behalf of our people and President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., thank you, Singapore Red Cross,” he added.
The SCR’s donation will be coursed through its counterpart, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC), which recently deployed its emergency response unit for search and rescue missions in flooded areas.
In an announcement, the SRC said the money will be used for “emergency operations, providing essential assistance and relief to the affected communities".
“The intensified rainfall, floods and landslides caused by the tropical cyclone have a devastating impact on families and communities,” said Benjamin William, secretary general and chief executive officer (CEO) of the SRC.
“We are closely monitoring the situation and are in close communication with the Philippine Red Cross to ensure that our contribution provides the best support to the affected communities,” added William.
Romualdez, leader of the 300-plus-strong House of Representatives, said the assistance would certainly help ease the pain and suffering of the typhoon victims.
“I am sure that at some future time, we will reciprocate the kindness of our Singaporean neighbors and other friends who are helping us,” he said.
The Speaker and his House colleagues, on their own, have been helping affected families through relief operations and temporary shelter.
Last week, Romualdez led the distribution of relief goods in several areas in Metro Manila, including San Juan, Marikina, Navotas, and Quezon City.
