LEGAZPI CITY – The weeklong sports showdown of 10,000 athletes from 17 regions in the 2024 Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) National Games finally closed its curtains here at Ibalong Centrum for Recreation Friday, July 26.
Despite heavy rains and power outages, PRISAA National Director Elbert Atilano Sr. believed that the staging of the annual tournament in the Albay capital was successful as it reached the requirement when it came to international standards.
“It is not below standard. They still reached the minimum standard,” said Atilano. “Practically, in handling the local host, we can say that it is within the required standard. And there were no major incidents.”
Student-athletes from more than 400 private schools competed in 27 disciplines including eight team sports, 14 individual and dual sports and five Cultural & Academic Events in various areas here.
Aside from reaching the standard, Atilano underscored that fair ruling was applied in every event -- a thing that they are proud of.
“Of course, there are many things that needed to be improved. But we have limited resources to come up with. Our target is the international standard,” he said.
“But we cannot do otherwise because it depends on the host. But when it comes to officiating, everything is handled by licensed referees and accredited referees. There were no problems with officiating,” he added.
With late results yet to be counted at press time, Central Visayas is expected to win the overall championship after harvesting 119 golds, 73 silvers and 65 bronzes as of 3 p.m. Friday, far ahead of Western Visayas (79-38-55), Cordillera Administrative Region (54-46-54), and CALABARZON (38-38-50).
In the youth division, the host Bicol maintained its lead by taking 84 gold, 63 silver and 53 bronze medals while CALABARZON (73-41-35) and Western Visayas (54-68-59) were at second and third places, respectively.
Tuguegarao City will host the next edition and is expected to unfold between March and April due to the elections slated in May.
