Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines (ULAP) Dakila “Dax’’ Cua extended full support to the President’s order directing the local government units (LGUs) to concentrate and prioritize their disaster response efforts in the secluded areas severely affected by typhoon "Carina".
“"Local government units, being on the front lines of disaster management, are continuously working to address immediate needs and are coordinating with national agencies to ensure efficient and effective relief operations,’’ Cua said.
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) has reported significant damage on the heels of Typhoon Carina's onslaught, including the disruption of roads and bridges, posing problems to accessibility in some areas.
The President emphasized the need for targeted interventions, particularly in areas still inaccessible due to landslides and flooding.
Under these unfavorable circumstances, the President instructed the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to coordinate with the concerned LGUs to clear blocked roads and restore connectivity.
Cua also thanked Marcos for his commitment to local autonomy, as the latter noted that local communities have the authority to declare states of calamity based on their specific needs.
The ULAP chief also urged all LGUs to remain vigilant, prioritize safety, and coordinate with relevant agencies to mitigate the effects of the typhoon.
