Only athletes who embody the Olympic spirit, and one whose achievements are extraordinary or far greater than the rest can lay claim to the privilege of being a flagbearer.

In the country’s case, that honor belongs to Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam – two boxers who rose to international prominence after winning a silver medal each in the 2020 Tokyo Games.

Small wonder, the two are so excited now they can no longer wait for the opening of the Paris Olympics on July 26, that for the very first time in the colorful history of the Games, will be held outside of a well-adorned stadium.

This time, they will parade in boats along the famed Seine, the river that flows through the City of Light.

“Of course, they are so excited,” said Ronald Chavez who is now on his second Olympic appearance as coach.

And who would not be happy and proud?

They are practically on the same page with NBA superstars Lebron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo who have been tasked to carry the flag of Team USA and Greece, respectively. And a lot more – most of them swimming champions.

Even Philippine Olympic Committee President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino said taking part in the parade of athletes – whether your delegation is big or small – can bring out excitement that is unique and hair-raising.

“It’s a different level of excitement and experience, they will truly enjoy the moment,” said Tolentino with a smile, assuring that all first-timers who will be lucky enough to be chosen will go home with happy memories.

Petecio and Paalam, who will be wearing a Francis Libiran-designed barong are not only thrilled but are nervous at the same time as thousands of fans across the world and billions of TV viewers will watch the traditional opening extravaganza. Being the designated PH flagbearers, Petecio and Paalam are also carrying the hopes of the entire nation which is looking forward for another successful campaign just like the Tokyo edition that saw the country produce one gold, two silver and one bronze medals.
