PNP: 21 dead, 5 missing due to 'Carina'

At least 21 people died while five others were reported missing during the onslaught of typhoon “Carina”, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported on Thursday, July 25, citing reports from its regional offices.

PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo said most of the fatalities were reported in the National Capital Region, Central Luzon and Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas Rizal, Quezon)—although the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) is still on the process of verifying if all of the reported casualties are typhoon-related.

“We are just getting all the data right now and we keep on counter-checking the data that we are getting from our regional offices. There is coordination with the NDRRMC to  harmonize our data,” said Fajardo.

Citing reports from the ground, Fajardo said some of the fatalities died of landslides while there were also reports of electrocution and drowning.

Aside from fatality and missing data, she said the PNP also monitored 15 people who suffered injuries during the onslaught of the weather disturbance.

Fajardo said a total of 47,682 families, composed of 202,015 persons, are now seeking refuge in almost 15,000 evacuation centers in various parts of the country as of 10 a.m. on Thursday.

“Our personnel on the ground were able to rescue 10,437 individuals,” said Fajardo.

“On the side of the PNP, we also have affected personnel numbering to 1,822 and the Chief PNP has already ordered for the accounting,  and to make sure that all policemen are safe,” she added.

“Carina” unleashed strong winds and heavy rains that resulted in the widespread flooding in Metro Manila, Bulacan, Rizal, Laguna and other parts of the country.
