LEGAZPI CITY, Albay – A total of 2,895 families or 8,298 persons were affected by heavy rains caused by the southwest monsoon or “habagat” and super typhoon "Carina" in the Bicol region on Wednesday, July 24.

Gremil Naz, Office of the Civil Defense-Bicol spokesperson, said that 410 families or 1,338 individuals were affected in town of Pioduran and Tabaco City in Albay province; 538 families or 2,631 individuals in Pasacao and Sipocot in Camarines Sur province; 1,937 families or 4,270 persons in San Miguel in Catanduanes province, and 10 families or 49 persons affected in Bulan, Sorsogon province.
Despite the number of affected families, Naz said that there were no reported evacuees as of 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
Naz said that at least 40 houses were partially damaged due to storm surge and coastal flooding in Pioduran and Sipocot. "Thirty four of which are in Pioduran, Albay and six in Sipocot, Camarines Sur," Naz said.
A total of 108 passengers, five rolling cargoes, and nine vehicles were stranded in the ports of Pasacaor and Aroroy and Masbate City in Masbate after the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)-Bicol suspended sea travel due to inclement weather.
At least 12 flights were cancelled in different airports in Bicol, Naz added.
Meanwhile, P353,959 worth of assistance was given by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)-Bicol, local government units, and PCG to affected families.
The DSWD-Bicol provided at least P265,864.80 worth of family food packs and non-food items to stranded families and affected families.
