Four members of a family died in Agoncillo town of Batangas after their house was buried in a landslide that was triggered by heavy rains in the past few days due to typhoon “Carina”, police reported on Wednesday.

Police Col. Jacinto Malinao, director of the Batangas Provincial Police, said the incident happened at around 9 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23, in Barangay Subic Ilaya but local residents only learned of the landslide early morning on Wednesday.

The victims were identified as Denden Malipol Rimas, 27; Lyca Malipo Rimas, 16; Aiza Malipol Rimas, 13; and, Samantha Rimas Mamugay, nine years old and daughter of Denden.

Police said Denden Rimas was pregnant. 

“Initial investigation disclosed that victims were inside when a landslide happened and buried their house. They died as a result of the landslide,” said Malinao. 

The house, he said, was made of bamboo and wooden materials.

In Nasugbu, a goto (rice porridge) vendor died when an acacia tree was uprooted and hit him at around 9:30 a.m. in Barangay Poblacion 3. 

“Initial investigation disclosed that while the victim was selling his Goto soup with his tricycle and due to the strong wind and heavy rain brought by ‘Typhoon Carina’, the big acacia tree beside fell down and accidentally hit him,” a report reaching Camp Crame read.

“As a result, the said victim was rushed to Apacible Memorial District hospital for medical treatment but declared dead on arrival due to head trauma,” it added.
