Go urges for firm yet peaceful, diplomatic approach to West Philippine Sea issues
Senator Christopher “Bong” Go on Wednesday, July 24 renewed his call for a firm yet peaceful and diplomatic approach in protecting the nation’s sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea.
Go made the call following President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s strong and passionate pronouncements on the WPS during his third State of the Nation Address (SONA) last Monday, July 22.
"Babantayan natin ang mga pangakong naibahagi ng administrasyon tulad ng ipaglaban ang tunay na atin pagdating sa isyu ng (We will keep the promises shared by the administration such as fighting for what is truly ours when it comes to the issue of the) West Philippine Sea,” Go said in a statement.
“Sana lang ay magawa ito sa mapayapa at diplomatikong paraan. Ayaw natin ng gulo (I just hope it can be done in a peaceful and diplomatic way. We don't want trouble),” the senator further said.
“But what is ours is ours. Ang importante ay maproteksyunan ang buhay at kabuhayan ng bawat Pilipino (What is important is to protect the life and livelihood of every Filipino),” Go emphasized.
In his third SONA, Marcos passionately reinforced the Philippines' sovereign rights over the West Philippine Sea, emphasizing its territorial significance and as an enduring element of the nation’s identity.
"Ang West Philippine Sea ay hindi isang kathang-isip natin lamang. Ito ay atin at ito ay mananatiling atin hangga't nagaalab ang diwa ng ating mahal na bansang Pilipinas (The West Philippine Sea is not just a fiction of ours. It is ours and it will remain ours as long as the spirit of our beloved country, the Philippines, burns),” Marcos said in his speech.
“Pagtitibayin at palalaguin natin ang kamalayan at kaalaman ng buong bansa at titiyaking maipapasa natin ito sa ating kabataan at ating susunod na mga salinlahi (Let us strengthen and grow awareness and knowledge of the entire country and we will make sure that we can pass it on to our youth and our next generations),” the President further stated.
Go previously denounced the aggressive acts by the Chinese in the region, notably when a China Coast Guard (CCG) vessel used water cannons to ward off a Philippine vessel trying to deliver supplies to the BRP Sierra Madre, which is grounded at Ayungin Shoal.
The lawmaker also criticized the CCG when it also used a military-grade laser against a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessel.
