45 schools damaged by Typhoon Carina, 'habagat': DepEd needs ₱308M for reconstruction, rehab


Typhoon Carina (international name: Gaemi), now a super typhoon, along with the southwest monsoon or “habagat,” has damaged 45 schools across eight regions, according to the Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday, July 24.

Based on the latest available data, DepEd reported that schools in eight regions were affected.

These regions include the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Western Visayas, and Eastern Visayas.

DepEd estimated the cost for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the damaged infrastructure at ₱308.50 million.

Additionally, DepEd noted that two regions have schools being used as evacuation centers: the National Capital Region (NCR) and Region IV-A.

Data from DepEd also showed there are currently 21 schools serving as evacuation centers.

Classes in public schools for the School Year (SY) 2024-2025 will start on July 29.
