PAGASA issues flood warning in Metro Manila

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued Flood Bulletin No. 2 on Tuesday, July 23, for the Metro Manila, Pasig-Marikina, and Laguna de Bay river basins due to continuous light to heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon, or “habagat," which is being enhanced by typhoon “Carina” (international name “Gaemi”).

PAGASA issued its first flood bulletin at 10:30 p.m. on July 22.

The second advisory was issued at 9 a.m. on Tuesday and will be valid until 9 p.m.

PAGASA said that over the next 12 hours, moderate rains with occasional heavy rainfall are expected to persist in the following river basins and their tributaries, as well as in areas susceptible to flooding: Main Laguna de Bay; other tributaries draining towards the Laguna de Bay; Upper Marikina River (Rodriguez, Antipolo, San Mateo, Quezon City, Marikina); Lower Marikina River (Pasig, Mandaluyong); Pasig River (Pasig, Makati, Mandaluyong, Manila); Tullahan River (Quezon City, Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela); Mango River (Rodriguez); Nangka River (Marikina, San Mateo, Antipolo); and San Juan River (Quezon City, San Juan, Manila).

PAGASA advised people living near the mountain slopes and in the low-lying areas of the aforementioned areas, as well as local disaster risk reduction and management councils, to remain vigilant for potential flash floods.

It also warned that local flooding could occur in some areas due to water impoundment and inadequate or clogged drainage systems.
