Manila, Pasig LGUs suspend classes, gov't work due to heavy rains

The local governments of Manila and Pasig City announced the suspension of classes in all levels as well as work in their respective government offices, on Wednesday, July 24, due to continuous rainfall brought about by the southwest monsoon (Habagat) and typhoon Carina.

Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan also ordered all Brigada Eskwela activities to be suspended.

She ordered the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau (MTPB) and the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) to monitor all areas for flooding, as well as the Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW) and City Electricians Office to check for any affected electrical wiring and posts, fallen structures, and trees.

The suspensions made by the cities were in accordance with the announcement of the Office of the Executive Secretary and based on the recommendation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), which ordered the suspension of work in government and classes in the National Capital Region (NCR), due to continuous rainfall.

However, it stated that all agencies that are involved in the delivery of basic and health services, preparedness or response to disasters and calamities, and those who perform other vital services shall continue with their operations and render the necessary services.

It added that the suspension of work for private companies and offices is left to the discretion of their respective heads.

As of 5 a.m., the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) raised a red rainfall warning in Metro Manila, Cavite, and Bataan.

The NDRRMC reminded the public that places under red alert can expect heavy rainfall, flooding, and landslides.

The Pasig LGU issued flood safety tips on their Facebook page to help residents learn what they should do before, during, and after the flood.
