GM-elect and International Master Daniel Quizon added feather to his cap after reigning supreme in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) Tour of Champions in San Juan City Sunday, July 21.
The 20-year-old Quizon outwitted FIDE Master Ellan Asuela in the final round of blitz and rapid play to bring home the P80,000 top purse in the 12-man tournament.
"I’m very happy to win again, especially in a major tournament like this," said Quizon.
"I would like to thank Mayor Jenny Barzaga, councilor Kiko Barzaga and national coach FIDE Master Roel
Abelgas for supporting my participation in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) Tour of Champions Grandfinals," he added.
Before winning the competition, Quizon outlasted GM Joey Antonio, a 13-time Philippine Open title holder, in the semifinals.
Asuela, meanwhile, bagged second while Antonio settled for third.
Fresh from his dominant stint in the Oaminal Open last week, Quizon is closer to completing his GM title quest as he carries 2457 points – three points away from the standard rating of 2460.
