Lapu-Lapu City resort shut down following freak accident that killed guest


CEBU CITY – A resort in Olango Island, Lapu-Lapu City was shut down after one of its guests died while using its floating jumping balloon.

The freak accident that claimed the life of 45-year-old Catherine Paypa Egam from Cagayan de Oro City happened in Pinky’s Floating Cottage Rental in Sitio Basdako, Barangay San Vicente, last July 11.

The victim died last July 19 while being treated at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center here.

In a video circulating online, the guest was seen lying on the edge of the floating jumping balloon. Later, a man jumped into the balloon, landing on the opposite end that caused the woman to bounce.

The woman turned upside down as she went airborne. The woman may have injured her spine after she landed on the jumping balloon head first. The woman fell into sea. A resort worker swam to where the woman fell.

Lapu-Lapu Mayor Junard Chan personally served the closure order against the resort on Sunday, July 22.

“As a result of the incident in your establishment that resulted to a loss of a life, you are hereby ordered to cease and desist from further operations effective immediately,” the order issued on July 20 said.

Chan said the establishment had to be closed while police investigation is still being conducted.

“All other permits issued in relation to the conduct of your business are likewise suspended,” the order added.
