The Manila City Jail Male Dormitory has equipped its persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) with valuable and marketable skills that may be their source of livelihood upon their release from detention in the future,  the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) said.

Recently, the Manila City Jail Male Dormitory has set up a series of comprehensive lectures on the theories and techniques in various aspects under the PDL skills development program.

Under the guidance of the BJMP invited expert instructors, the PDLs engaged in hands-on training, including tile-setting.

“The skills acquired through this training will open up opportunities for the PDL to secure employment in the construction industry upon their release. With a TESDA certification, they will be well-prepared to offer quality workmanship and contribute meaningfully to the workforce,'' it added.

To further hone the PDL’s livelihood and culinary skills, the Manila City Jail Male Dormitory also organized a cooking enhancement session that focused on the preparation of squash fritters.

The Manila City Jail Male Dormitory explained that this initiative aims to equip the PDLs with the “valuable culinary skills’’ that can serve as a sustainable source of income while promoting healthy eating habits.

During the session, the Welfare and Development Section personnel of the Manila City Jail Male Dormitory provided the step-by-step process of making squash fritters, highlighting the nutritional benefits of this nutritious and delicious dish.

The PDLs were taught with the various nutrients found in squash, emphasizing its role in maintaining a healthy body.

“The training provided the PDL with practical skills that can be used to generate income in the future. Additionally, it encouraged them to think about the nutritional benefits they can offer to potential customers, thereby promoting health and wellness within the community.

By focusing on nutritious and sustainable food options like squash fritters, the program aligns with the goals of National Nutrition Month to improve overall health and well-being,’’ the Manila City Jail Male Dormitory asserted.
