House 'Young Guns' lay out expectations for SONA

Members of the “Young Guns” bloc in the House of Representatives shared on Sunday, July 21, their expectations for the plans and priorities that President Marcos will enumerate in his State of the Nation Address (SONA).

1-Rider Party-list Rep. Rodge Gutierrez says he wants Marcos to emphasize the need for good governance and anti-corruption measures.

Gutierrez reckoned that the President’s speech should at least consider promoting transparency and accountability in government operations.

“I look forward to the President’s initiatives to promote good governance, transparency, and accountability. Combating corruption at all levels of government is essential for our nation’s progress,” he said in a joint statement with fellow Young Guns. 

For Lanao del Sur 1st district Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong, the President must stress the importance of infrastructure development for regional growth.

“I am keen to hear the President’s plans for advancing our infrastructure projects, especially those that will benefit the provinces,” noted Adiong.

“Strengthening our connectivity and transportation networks is essential for regional development,” he added.

Zambales 1st district Rep. Jay Khonghun, meanwhile, hopes Marcos will discuss the urgent need for continued economic recovery and growth.

He particularly wants to hear some focus given to job creation and support for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

“I anticipate the President discussing strategies to continue with the country’s economic growth, create jobs, and foster a conducive environment for businesses and entrepreneurs. Supporting MSMEs is vital for our economy,” added Khonghun.

In addition, Ako Bicol Party-list Rep. Jil Bongalon said the SONA should underscore the need for climate action and disaster resilience.

“It is crucial for the President to outline concrete steps to combat climate change and strengthen disaster resilience,” Bongalon said. 

“Our communities are vulnerable, and we need robust measures to protect our people and environment,” he continued.

Lastly, La Union 1st district Rep. Paolo Ortega noted that the President should also address the need for agricultural development and food security, especially through support for farmers.

“Supporting our farmers through subsidies, modern farming techniques, and improved market access is crucial. Ensuring food security and sustainability must be a priority,” Ortega said.

President Marcos will deliver his third SONA on Monday, July 22 at the Batasang Pambansa Complex in Quezon City.
