In a statement on Saturday, July 20, the mayor took a closer look on the report and explained that the ranking was made among 60 international cities for tourists only.
Lacuna-Pangan said it is unclear if the scope of “Manila” in the report pertains more to the whole of Metro Manila, or possibly also including the suburbs just outside of the capital region.
In the report, the risk components in Manila were broke down into: Disaster Risk (Highest), Personal Safety Risk (5th Highest), and Health Security Risk (7th Highest).
"Considering the generic breakdown of the risk components stated in the news report... We can safely surmise that the scope of these three components covers Metro Manila, not just the City of Manila itself," the mayor added.
The local chief executive stressed the strict compliance of hotel, mall and condominium managements with building, engineering, fire, and sanitation laws and standards.
"Our National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (DRRMO) is capable of responding to all kinds of disasters," she said.
When it comes to health risk issue, the mayor highlighted that Manila’s Covid-19 vaccination and other response measures are among the best in the country.
The mayor also emphasized that the city is professionally-run by the elements of the Manila Police District (MPD) who are highly dedicated to their mission in keeping everyone safe in the city.
"But we keep reminding them there is always room for improvement and they should outpace and stay ahead of the criminals," she also said.
The lady mayor reiterated that the city is doing its part not just for high net worth tourists, but for everyone in the city especially its residents.
The mayor also asked the national government agencies and stakeholders to make all of Metro Manila a livable and safe metropolis.
