North Korea's missile launch undermines regional peace—DFA

The Philippines on Tuesday, July 2, condemned North Korea for its launching of two ballistic missiles, saying that the act undermines the peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula and the larger Indo-Pacific region.

“The Philippines condemns the DPRK's latest ballistic missile launch, which provokes tensions and undermines economic progress, peace, and stability in the Korean Peninsula and the Indo-Pacific region,” the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a statement.
 

DPRK or the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is the official name of North Korea.
 

“The Philippines has repeatedly called on the DPRK to also comply with its international obligations and the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and to commit to constructive and peaceful dialogue with the Republic of Korea,” it furthered.
 

It also added that the Philippines “has consistently supported the call for a complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization of the DPRK.”
 

According to reports, the DPRK fired two missiles on Monday, July 1, after the United States, South Korea, and Japan concluded their military drills.
 

North Korea’s news agency KCNA also said that the government has successfully tested a new tactical ballistic missile capable of carrying a 4.5-ton super-large warhead.
 

While North Korea did not say that two missiles were launched, Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) spokesperson Colonel Lee Sung-jun said in a briefing that the report was likely a “deception” because one of the two missiles was monitored to be flying abnormally and appeared in a field not far from North Korea’s capital of Pyongyang.
 

He also stressed that “conducting a test-fire inland is extremely rare and it is highly likely to be false to claim it has succeeded.”
 

Tensions and instability in the Korean Peninsula could potentially affect some 60,000 Filipinos in South Korea, as well as 242,000 Filipinos in Japan.
