Epic wizardry: Filipino math wizards bag 59 medals in international competitions


Fifty-seven Filipino math wizards have made the country proud after bagging a total of 59 medals in two international mathematics competitions held in Vietnam and Indonesia.

This was announced on Tuesday, July 2, by the Mathematics Trainers' Guild Phils. (MTG), an organization training the gifted kids.

MTG head Dr. Simon Chua lauded the performances of the children as he noted their hard work and perseverance in overcoming the competitions' challenges.

A total of 22 medals were received by the 20-member Philippine team composed of math wizards from various public and private schools across the country at the Global Mathematics Competition (GMC) held in Hanoi, Vietnam from June 29 to July 2.

The team garnered two gold, eight silver and eight bronze medals, plus four merit awards in the competition participated by math wizards from eight countries composed of Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Brazil and Saudi Arabia.

The contingent placed second overall in the GMC, topped by Vietnam, while Thailand and Indonesia got the third spot.
    
The country's gold medals came courtesy of Hannah Alexis Olaguer of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo National High School, and the Junior High squad in the team event.
    
The silver medalists are Roxy Charlize Quidilla of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School, Gabriel Anthony Sapinoso of Malagasang Elem. School, Carlos Balderama of Albay Central School, Lara Jane Natividad of Phil. Cultural College Caloocan, Alexa Amara Dimapilis of First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities, Jaycel Altairsipole Juan of Phil. Yu Chiau School, Rianne Pocsidio of Hope Christian High School, and the Lower Primary squad in the team event.
    
The bronze medal winners are Vincent Abenoja of Elisabeth Seton School, Johann Fransz Isleta of San Nicolas Academy, Hezekiah Lucas Martinez of Phil. Yu Chiau School, Samantha Grace Gonzales of Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities, Vivienne Zuri Abenoja of Las Pinas National High School, Arielle Francene dela Cruz of Phil. Science High School-Main Campus, Alix Isabel Ofrin of St. Paul College Pasig, Lheijin Dacumos of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo National High School Imus, and the Lower Primary squad in the team event.
    
The merit awardees are Nadine Clarisse Martha Castillo of Colegio San Agustin Makati, Khent Lewistan Su of Phil. Institute of Quezon City, Jasmine Rosita Belen of Ateneo de Davao University High School, and Jianna Brielle Go of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School.
    
In the 2023 leg of the GMC, the Philippines received one gold, four silver, one bronze and three merit medals. MTG officers Dr. Isidro Aguilar and Robert Degolacion led the delegation.
    
On the other hand, 37 other MTG-trained math wizards also did the country proud after winning two gold, 12 silver, 16 bronze and seven merit medals at the International Math Wizards Challenge, held from June 20 to 23 in Bogor, Indonesia.
    
MTG kids were "off to a good start" following their 629-medal haul in several math contests in 2023, Chua noted.
