The 19-year-old Eala, who notched her career-high WTA ranking of 155th spot, outlasted Lucia Cortez Llorca, 7-5, 7-5, in Round of 16 and set up a quarterfinal match against Ukrainian and world No. 123 Yulia Starodubtseva.

The Asian Games two-time bronze medalist asserted her mastery over the unseeded Llorca in their one-hour match which was reminiscent of her similar win over the latter in the same tournament last year.

Eala will take on Starodubtseva, who came from a dominant victory over Belgian Magali Kempen, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to the quarters.

The Filipina tennis ace started her campaign at the Spanish tourney in a rousing fashion, beating Dutch Lian Tran, 6-4, 6-2, in the opening round.

In doubles, Eala and French partner Estelle Cascino whipped Czech Victoria Bervid and Italy’s Laura Mair, 6-4, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.

The victory arranged the pair a semifinal meeting with Mexican Maria Jose Portillo Ramirez and Bolivian Noelia Zeballos, who outhustled Starodubtseva and Indian Rutuja Bhosale, 6-4, 6-4, in quarters.

Eala’s campaign in Spain is part of her preparation for the US Open which fires off on Aug. 26.
