BAGUIO CITY – The Bureau of Fire Protection here recorded 63 fire incidents from January 1 to July 17.
These were usually caused by faulty electrical wiring and unattended cigarette butts.
The BFP said 20 were residential fires, 18 were grass fires, 11 were forest fires, seven were non-residential fires, six were related to transportation, and litter or bonfire incident.
Most of these occurred during the months of February and March.

The BFP identified electrical ignition caused by arcing or when electrical current jumps across a gap in a circuit or between two electrodes as the main causes of residential, non-residential, and structural fires.
Liquified Petroleum Gas explosion, household appliances such as power banks and chest freezers that overheat, and electrical ignition due to loose connections have also been identified as the causes of residential, non-residential, and structural fires.
Smoking and unattended cigarette butts are the main causes of grass and forest fires, followed by unattended children playing with matches or lighters as well as open flames caused by lighted candles.
The BFP reminded the public to prevent fire by avoiding overloading of power supply outlets, avoid burning garbage or dry leaves, disconnect electrical gadgets before leaving home, avoid unattended cooking especially when using wood, and regularly check the electrical wirings in the house if repairs are needed and at least every three to five years.
