On a roll in Hong Kong: Filipino math wizards bag medals, trophies in HK math contest


Eight Filipino mathematics aces brought home medals and trophies following their participation in the 24th Po Leung Kuk Primary Mathematics World Contest (PMWC) held in Hong Kong from July 16 to 18.

According to the Mathematics Trainers' Guild Phils. (MTG), the group who trained the kids, the eight-man Philippine team bagged two silver and three bronze medals as well as two trophies.

MTG head Dr. Simon Chua lauded the team's efforts and success in the competition which drew over 120 contestants from the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Nepal, Bulgaria, South Africa, Vietnam, China, Macau, and Hong Kong. China, Thailand, and Bulgaria topped the event.

Chua named the country's silver medalists as Jenelle Nyka Lee of Chiang Kai Shek College and Annette Tiffany Yu of St. John's Institute- Bacolod.

The bronze medalists were Ethan Caleb Choy of Jubilee Christian Academy, Heal Job Esio of Pangasinan Universal Institute, and Ethan Liam Go of St. Jude Catholic School.

Other Philippine team members include Don Emmanuel dela Pena of FAITH Batangas, Albert Steven Tan of St. Jude Catholic School, and Ashton Grant Yang of Jubilee Christian Academy.
   
MTG officers Renard Eric Chua and Arvie Ubarro led the delegation.
   
"Last month, two groups of MTG-trained students brought home a total of 59 medals, including 4 golds, from the International Math Wizards Challenge in Bogor, Indonesia, and the Global Math Contest in Hanoi, Vietnam. Meanwhile, 11 math aces will represent the Philippines in this weekend's World Mathematics Olympiad Fusion, also to be held in Hong Kong," MTG said.
