Duterte backs Trump's presidential bid

DAVAO CITY â€“ Former President Rodrigo R. Duterte on Thursday, July 18, expressed support and congratulated former US President Donald J. Trump for clinching the Republican nomination in the 2024 presidential elections.

"I extend my congratulations to former US President Donald J. Trump on his nomination as the Republican Presidential candidate for the 2024 US Presidential Elections," Duterte said in a statement of support on Trump's candidacy.

Duterte recalled the strong ties forged with Trump in strengthening the Philippines and US relations and ensuring stability in the Asia-Pacific region. Trump earlier made a remark that he and Duterte "had a great relationship."

Duterte said he and Trump managed the complex challenges and worked together in bolstering the deep and comprehensive ties between the Philippines and US.

"As Trump enters the momentous phase in his political life with the hope of steering the United States and the American people anew in this challenging time, I wish him nothing but strength, wisdom, and the best of health," Duterte said.

He added that it is also his fervent hope that the Philippines and the United States continue to strengthen the rich foundation of cooperation and partnership that have been cultivated over the years to ensure continued peace, security, and prosperity for the people.

Duterte has been vocal in his opinion that Trump merited re-election, commending the former American president's response to his choice to terminate a long-standing military agreement with the United States.
