Many know CIMB Bank Philippines as one of the country’s first banks that offered digital-only options, making banking more accessible and convenient for Filipinos. But accessibility is just one of the positive effects of CIMB’s digital-only banking efforts. CIMB Bank PH set out for an even bigger mission: inclusion.

Inclusion means there is no discrimination, regardless of socioeconomic class, educational attainment, or background. When there is no discrimination, people can overcome life’s challenges more easily. The Bank understands this, which is why it tirelessly advocates for better financial inclusion in the country to help Filipinos fulfill their life goals.

Creating a platform for Pinoy “Mavericks”

As a newer player in the Philippine market, CIMB Bank PH is no stronger to the challenges of inclusion. Coupled with the desire to inspire more people to advocate for inclusivity, CIMB wanted to amplify exemplary stories of Filipinos who also fought for equity by overcoming their own adversities. This was how the first 'Pinoy Mavericks Awards' came to be. The awards are to support these extraordinary individuals with amplifying their stories to be heard by even more Filipinos.

“These types of stories need a platform to inspire even more people to overcome life’s challenges and live their purpose. Through this campaign, we want to hopefully start a movement of ordinary people doing extraordinary things not just for themselves, but also for their own communities, true to our mission of advancing the lives of each and every Filipino,” said D’Artagnan Aguilar, Chief Marketing Officer of CIMB Bank PH.

CIMB, through the Pinoy Mavericks Awards, honors the courage and resilience of those who were able to build communities for those with similar challenges to support each other (e.g. work-from-home mothers, cancer patients), those who are survivors of various challenges (e.g. abuse, disease) who have become inspirations, as well as those who are defying their physical “limitations” to fulfill their dreams and obligations.

“The stories that are part of the Pinoy Mavericks Awards help provide a valuable look at what Filipinos need to become financially included. This, in turn, also helps guide us in finding solutions that can truly help them, so that we may work hand-in-hand to overcome financial adversity together and make the world a little bit better,” shared Aguilar.

Honoring the first-ever Pinoy Mavericks Awards nominees

Among the nominees are MK Bertulfo, founder of Filipino Homebased Moms; award-winning life coach and LGBTQIA+ advocate, Myke Celis; Steve Dailisan, a known broadcaster turned pilot; Phoebe Fructuoso, chairwoman of PAVE Philippines; Marlon Fuentes, a ride-hailing app driver living with Tourette’s Syndrome; Deaf community advocate, Erline Maniquis; Jkhriez Pastrana, a little person who’s an entertainer and aspiring lawyer; April Perreras, founder of Move Beyond Cancer; Jerico Ramota, convener of Rolling Bayanihan; and Jerico Silvers, a writer and publisher.

CIMB encourages Filipinos to get to know more about the stories of the nominees through the first CIMB Pinoy Mavericks Awards and encourages them to share stories that moved them.  CIMB will be awarding three winners each receiving PHP 200,000, half of which will go to their selected beneficiaries. The runners-up will also receive PHP 50,000.

The company believes that the awards do not only serve as an opportunity to honor these mavericks but is also an avenue to advance positive change even more. CIMB recognizes them for embodying a purpose-driven life through the award, as the Bank wants to equip them in reaching more, impacting more lives.
