NAST PHL mourns the passing of National Scientist Clare R. Baltazar

The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL), on Monday, July 15, mourned the passing of National Scientist Clare R. Baltazar.

In a statement, NAST PHL said Baltazar, who passed away on July 13, "consistently maintained outstandingly high standards of achievement throughout her academic life."

NAST PHL, an attached agency to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), reminisced about Baltazar's contributions to the field of science, particularly her book "Philippine Insects: An Introduction."

This book, the first authoritative text on Philippine insects by Baltazar, showcases her significant contributions to science. Among her notable achievements was the discovery of eight genera and one subgenus of "Hymenoptera," arguably the largest of all insect orders.

These accomplishments earned her substantial recognition both locally and internationally. In 1980, she was honored with the Rizal Patria Award in Entomology. Baltazar was elected to the Academy in 1981 and conferred the rank and title of National Scientist by the President of the Philippines in 2001 for her outstanding contributions to entomology.

NAST PHL is organizing a state necrological service for Baltazar on July 18 at the DOST Compound in Bicutan, Taguig City.

"This will be followed by the state funeral at noon at the Manila Memorial Park," it said.
