PCG eyes new Batangas sub-station on lot donated by ex-commandant

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has received a 500-square-meter land from its former commandant, retired admiral Artemio Abu, for the establishment of a new coast guard sub-station in Isla Verde, Batangas.
In a statement on Saturday, July 13, the PCG said that a deed of donation has been signed by Abu and Commodore Geronimo Tuvilla, commander of the Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog (CGDSTL), to formalize the land donation and initiate the establishment of Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Isla Verde on July 12.
The land is strategically located near a crucial waterway and close to the Verde Island Passage which is renowned as the epicenter of marine shore fish biodiversity worldwide.
“Offering this parcel of land symbolizes our profound gratitude for the incredible opportunity to serve and be part of such a distinguished organization,” said Abu, who served as the 29th PCG commandant, holding the top post from March 1, 2022 until his retirement on Oct. 19, 2023.
“This donation represents our deep appreciation for the Coast Guard's unwavering commitment to safeguarding our waters, protecting our shores, and ensuring the safety of maritime activities in our country. It is not just about the land itself but about a shared commitment and vision for a safer and more secure maritime environment,” the Malvar, Batangas native added.
The signing was witnessed by Abu’s wife, Mrs. Carlota Vergara Abu, and son Malvar Municipal Councilor Kurt Patrick Abu.
Meanwhile, Tuvilla said the donated land will be “instrumental in improving the Coast Guard's operational infrastructure and capabilities.”
He said the establishment of a coast guard sub-station in Isla Verde would “significantly enhance the PCG's capabilities to safeguard its vital marine ecosystem.”
“This initiative underscores the CGDSTL's commitment to preserving and protecting the area for future generations, ensuring that its rich biodiversity remains intact and continues to thrive,” Tuvilla noted.
