The cat in the hat gives back

On July 20 and 21, a children’s outreach performing arts and theater program will take over the RCBC Plaza in Makati to present their adaptation of Seussical. Based on the books and characters created by Dr. Seuss, the portmanteau theater work - combining the words Seuss and musical - has music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lyn Ahrens; and will be directed by Deana Aquino and Joonee Garcia. The musical brings such loved characters as the Cat in the Hat, the inhabitants of Whoville, and Horton onto one stage.

The presentation is part of the Tuloy Performing Arts Program, a beacon of hope for promising young artists in the fields of Dance, Drama, and Choral Singing. By partnering with The Rude Mechanicals Theater Company and Academy One, the program has been mounting full length musicals, and have succeeded in placing several young dancers in schools and companies both here and abroad. This program is not just about art, it's about transforming lives and creating a brighter future for these young talents.

The Tuloy Performing Arts Program exists under the umbrella of the long-standingTuloy Foundation Inc., which has existed for 30 years. The foundation is committed to transforming street children into responsible, contributing members of society. Children aged 9 to 18 who fall under the Foundation are provided with basic literacy and technical and vocational skills and are assisted with job placement when their age allows it. The Foundation's dedication and experience offer a solid foundation for the success of the Tuloy Performing Arts Program.

In those three decades, around 21,000 children have been served, and over 4,700 have graduated from the basic and functional literacy programs. This Seussical is just one manifestation of how the Program can uplift these street children's plight and offer them opportunities to shine and interact with mainstream society.
