Philippine boxing’s emerging star Weljon Mindoro turned heads in US debut, scoring a knockout victory over England’s Tyler Goodjohn in their middleweight bout at the ProBox TV Events Center in Plant City, Florida Thursday, July 11.

Mindoro, 24, made quick work of Goodjohn after sending him down the canvas thrice – all of which came in the second round and the last convinced referee Massimo Montanini to stop the fight that was originally scheduled to go eight rounds.
Mindoro scored the first knockdown at the 1:05 mark before following it up with another 25 seconds later. A booming left hook from Mindoro sent Goodjohn back to the floor but this time, the punishment was just too much for the British to overcome.
The Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur native remained unscathed as he notched his 12th victory which all were from knockouts against one draw while Goodjohn dropped to 13-6 record.
Initially, Mindoro was supposed to battle Mexico’s Mahonri Montes but his original foe backed out due to undisclosed reasons, making way for his clash against the British pug.
The 5-foot-11 Filipino pug dictated the tempo of the fight early on, hitting Goodjohn with slick combinations. Goodjohn landed some punches on Mindoro although they were not as powerful considering that he had not fought in the last seven years.
Goodjohn tried to play mind games in the second round after putting his guard down while smiling which Mindoro took advantage of and unleashed a series of blows that humbled his much older rival.
