BACOLOD CITY – The province of Negros Occidental reported P10.8 million in damage to corn by fall armyworm in 38 barangays in one month.

The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist said 1,117 farmers and 753.38 hectares of cornfield were affected by the infestation from June 1 to July 1.
Himamaylan City registered P3.1 million in damage, affecting 295 farmers and 177.36 hectares in Barangays III-Poblacion, 3, Buenavista, Carabalan, Caradio-an, Libacao, Mahalang, Mambagaton, San Antonio, and Talaban.
Moises Padilla had P2.4 million in damage, affecting 201 farmers and 166.25 hectares in Barangays Crossing Magallon, Inolingan, Macagahay, and Quintin Remo.
La Castellana reported P1.6-million crop damage in 70.91 in Barangays Biak na Bato, Cabacungan, Cabagnaan, Manghanoy, Puso, Robles, and Sag-ang. One-hundred seventy-four farmers were affected.
In Isabela town, damage was pegged at P1.6 million covering 182.12 hectares and affecting 262 farmers from Barangays 9, Camang-Camang, Cansalongon, Makilignit, Mansablay, San Agustin, and Sebucawan.
Murcia reported losses of P1.5 million, affecting 140 farmers and covering 121.54 hectares in Barangays Amayco, Canlandog, Buenavista, Minoyan, San Miguel, Pandanon, and Caliban.
Hinoba-an has the lowest crop damage at P439,485, affecting 45 farmers and 35.20 hectares in Barangays Bacuyangan, Culipapa, and Sangke.
The province is awaiting the official report and recommendations of a team of experts from the National Crop Protection Center of the University of the Philippines-Los Baños (NCPC-UPLB) which studied affected areas, particularly corn and sugarcane plantations in central Negros Occidental.
The team arrived last week and seeks to help farmers contain the fall armyworm infestation in affected local government units.
