Marcos: Gov't terminating, re-bidding contracts of abandoned APECO projects

President Marcos revealed that the contracts of nearly P800 million worth of projects abandoned by the Aurora Pacific Economic Zone and Freeport Authority (APECO) are being terminated and re-bid so the people of Aurora can benefit from them immediately.

Marcos said this as he led the distribution of various government assistance to farmers, fisherfolk, and their families in Baler, Aurora on Friday morning, July 12.
In his speech, the President recognized that the unfinished projects worth around P796 million were a waste and they were looking for ways to turn things around.
"Hinahanapan natin ng solusyon ang mga inabandonang proyekto ng APECO na nagkakahalaga ng halos P800 milyong (For looking for solutions for the abandoned APECO projects worth nearly P800 million)," he said.
"Sadyang napakalaking kasayangan kung ang nangyari po dito na sana ay ngayon pinapakinabangan na ng mga mamamayan ng Aurora (It is a waste because the people of Aurora could hae benefited from them already)," he added.
According to Marcos, APECO president and CEO Gil Taway IV has moved to rebuild the ecozone after learning that around 10 utility and infrastructure projects within the property were left unfinished.
"Napagdesisyunan na na itigil at i-rebid ang mga kontrata upang tuluyan nang matapos ang mga proyekto sa lalong madaling panahon (We have decided to terminate the contracts and rebid them so we can finish the projects already)," he said.
A state-run Philippine News Agency (PNA) report said some projects were 80 percent complete but abandoned. These projects were also "not moving for three to seven years after contracts were awarded."
Infra projects
President Marcos assured the people of Aurora that the government is carrying out several major infrastructure projects in the province, including the construction of road, flood control, and airport projects.
The government is also crafting the Baler Airport Development Project for the facility to accommodate bigger aircraft for increased passenger handling capacity.
The President reported that last June, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) successfully facilitated the land purchase with an August target for fund release so the construction could commence soon.
Regardng flood control initiatives, Marcos reported the completion of the Aguang River Flood Control Structure Project in Baler to address the perennial flooding problem following the overflow of the Aguang River.
Farmers and fisherfolk
Meanwhile, President Marcos turned over farm machinery to local farmers and fisherfolk during the event to boost agricultural efficiency in Aurora. Additionally, he handed over P10,000 each to 10 selected beneficiaries from the province.
The Provincial Government of Aurora likewise received P10 million to support local development projects to enhance the quality of life in the province.
On the same day, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) disburses P10,000 to each of the 10,000 beneficiaries.
