The program will provide learning assistance to non-readers and frustrated readers assessed by the Schools Division Office Valenzuela through the Philippine Individual Reading Test (Phil-IRI).
The reading camp is a 10-day training in reading and comprehension for Grade 3-5 students.
Over 1,245 students were expected to participate in the camp, of which 78 students were non-readers and 1,168 were frustrated readers.
Mayor Wes Gatchalian said that there has been a significant decrease in the number of non-readers and frustrated readers in the past years.
“Nakikita naman po natin sa datos na talagang malaking tulong nito sa pagbabasa, paghahabol, at paghahanda ng ating mga learners sa paparating na pasukan (We can see from the data that it is really a big help in reading, pursuing, and preparing our learners for the upcoming entrance exam),” he said.
Public school teachers and teachers’ aides from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela (PLV) will facilitate the program.
The local government will also provide free school kits and two sets of uniforms per student for the upcoming school year.
