West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. announced plans to expand its hybrid sewer system (HSS) to further enhance the collection of household wastewater.
With an allocation of P3.5 billion for wastewater projects utilizing the HSS concept, Maynilad said it aims to improve services for its customers encountering difficulties in securing individual sewer connections.
Presently, the Maynilad serves approximately 93,000 customers in the City of Manila through the hybrid system.
The HSS concept targets households that encounter difficulties in securing individual sewer connections, particularly those situated in narrow alleys, easements, and peripheral areas.
Maynilad said this approach involves utilizing the existing drainage system connected to homes to gather wastewater.
But instead of allowing untreated wastewater to flow into nearby water bodies, the hybrid system intercepts and directs it through a sewer line to a Maynilad sewage treatment facility for proper cleaning before discharge into the environment.
In 2020, during the peak of the pandemic, Maynilad started using the HSS idea to make sure they could keep providing sewerage services. This approach makes installing sewer pipelines more efficient in terms of time and cost.
Maynilad no longer needs to set up an elaborate sewer network to connect individual houses on the outskirts of the city.
