Magnitude 7.1 quake hits Sultan Kudarat— Phivolcs


The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Thursday, July 11, recorded a 7.1-magnitude earthquake in Sultan Kudarat.

Based on Phivolcs’ data, the earthquake struck at 10:13 a.m., with an epicenter 133 kilometers (km) west of Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat.

Initially, Phivolcs reported the quake as a magnitude 6.5 tremor.

The quake was felt as a "moderately strong" tremor at Intensity IV in Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental.

It was also felt as a "weak" tremor at Intensity III in the City of Mati, Davao Oriental; and Glan, Sarangani.

Intensity II (slightly felt) was experienced in Maragusan, Davao De Oro; the City of Tagum, Davao Del Norte; Libungan, and Tulunan, Cotabato; Kiamba, Maitum, and Malapatan, Sarangani; the City of Koronadal, South Cotabato; and the City of General Santos.

Meanwhile, it was "scarcely perceptible" at Intensity I in the City of Davao; Tantangan, South Cotabato; and Lebak, Sultan Kudarat.

Phivolcs' instruments also recorded the earthquake at Intensity III in Don Marcelino, and Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental; Glan, and Malungon, Sarangani.

Intensity II was recorded in the City of Tagum, Davao Del Norte; the City of Digos, Davao Del Sur; Matalam, Cotabato; the City of Cotabato; and Intensity I in Nabunturan, Davao De Oro; the City of Davao; the City of Kidapawan, Cotabato; Maitum, Sarangani; T'boli, and Tampakan, South Cotabato; Bagumbayan, Esperanza, Isulan, Kalamansig, Lambayong, and Lebak, Sultan Kudarat; and the City of Bislig, Surigao Del Sur.

It noted that the quake, tectonic in origin, was due to the sudden movement of the earth’s crust and had a depth of focus of 722 km.

Meanwhile, Phivolcs expected an “aftershock” but “no damages” due to this earthquake.
