SC to release passers in 2024 Shari’ah Bar Exams July 16; oathtaking set August 14 at Manila Hotel

The list of successful examinees in the 2024 Shari’ah Bar Examinations (SBE) will be released by the Supreme Court (SC) on July 16.

SC Associate Justice Maria Filomena D. Singh, chairperson of the 2024 SBE committee, said the oath taking and signing of the Roll of Attorneys will be held on August 14 at the Manila Hotel.

It was not known immediately how many of the 852 examinees who were registered to take the examinations last April 28 and May 2 at the Ateneo de Davao University in Davao City and at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City finished the two-day tests.

While the examinations were conducted online, still many examinees took the tests manually, using pen and paper, at UP’s Malcolm Theater.

The Shari’ah Bar exams were originally set by the SC last Feb. 25 and 28.  However, the SC re-scheduled the examinations “in anticipation of the holy month of Ramadan (March 9 to April 8) and to allow the prospective examinees additional time to review and to prepare the application requirements….”

Subjects covered in the two-day examinations are jurisprudence (Figh) and customary laws (Adat); persons, family relations and property; succession, wills or adjudication and settlement of estates as well as procedure in the Shari’ah Courts.

Shari'ah or Islamic law is implemented in the legal system of the Philippines and applicable only to Muslims.  Shari'ah courts set up in the country are under the direct supervision of the SC.

After this year’s SBE, the examinations will be done yearly instead of every other year.

In the 2022 SBE, 156 out of 532 examinees passed the tests.

The top 10 Shari-ah Bar topnotchers in 2022 were: 1) Ambung, Maniri, Cayasalam C. (85.6250%), 2) Curo, Norhasima S. (85.5250%), 3) Laguindab, Aina L. (84.9000%), 4) Mortaba, Nur-aima B.
